Profile

Sean started to play mandolin in 2004 after many years playing guitar, when he realized that the mandolin was easier to tote around! Sean currently studies with Mike Marshall, one of the world’s leading mandolin players, who mentors a very small group of advanced mandolin players. Sean has attended two annual Mandolin Symposiums, gatherings of great mandolin players from all over the world, where he studied with many of the world’s leading players and teachers including Chris Thile, David Grisman, Sam Bush, Hamilton de Holanda, Evan Marshall, Mike Compton and Radim Zenkl. He has competed successfully in major mandolin playing competitions around the country, and is also becoming known as an excellent composer and arranger.

Sean plays a wide range of music on mandolin including classical, jazz, bluegrass and folk rock. He is presently working to develop his playing in the Brazilian "choro" style.

Sean is a member of The Sierra Swing Conspiracy, a gypsy jazz trio. He also frequently sits in with acoustic music recording artists and bands and can be seen at a number of venues around the San Jose area every week.

Less often mentioned is that Sean can play both guitar and tenor banjo pretty proficiently although he often will not admit to that fact.
